Cemetery Junction

"The 1970s arrived. Times were changing, reading wasn't. Cemetery Junction is a hilarious comedy about three friends who dream of breaking free from the mundane world of Cemetery Junction. Knowing that they can't spend the rest of their lives drinking, fighting and joking around, they're forced to make a choice. Nothing is quite simple as it should be though, especially when on of them falls for his boss's daughter, only to find that she is already engaged to be married. To get what they'll need to break the rules, whatever the cost."

I got this one from the British Library. When i saw the trailer, all the dialogues were muffled and I couldn't makes sense of what the movies was about, but i still wanted to watch it! Hehe!
Cemetery Junction seems to have got a lot of 4 stars and good reviews. The film is about 3 boys who just wanna have fun, but they obviously can't do that unless they want to end up as drunk bums on the roads. The films starts of with all of them getting jobs to get by life and "do something" with their lives. There is Freddie Taylor who works as a Life Insurance Company as a salesmen, Bruce who works at the factory and Paul aka Snork as a station announcer! The story is set in post the Swinging 60s and how the concept of teenage wanting to be free and seeming unruly to the adults in the process.
This setting was touched upon very briefly in the film. The main focus of the film was the story and the excellent acting. British cinema believes its audience to be clever enough to read between the lines and make interpretation. Unlike say Bollywood, where the directors often believe that their audience need fairly detailed prologues (no matter how cliche the storyline is )! I noticed that the actors were often expressive and implying reactions and traits which were left to the audience to interpret that. I liked that very much!
Coming back to the film.. In terms of story i found an okay one i guess. The line didn't seem like a majorly innovative theme. It was teens have a dream, think different, break out of the shell and blah! But what i liked a lot were the little sub-stories woven in. There is Freddie, his job and love- the Boss's daughter and his crazy family, then there is Bruce who works at factory, his annoyance with his Dad for letting his mum run off with another man- the Dad has secrets of his own which our man Bruce is happily oblivious too! Then there is the weird Paul slash Snork, whose chubby and always seems to say the wrong thing, and has no girl. Aside from these main characters- there is the Boss's daughter-Julie Kendrick whose young and bubbly and stuck with a boring and chauvinistic fiance and Dad! Everybody in the film has their own unique background and character no matter how trivial their role in the film! And then there is the overall story of young people wanting to be different!
Now what all i loved about the movie:
the humor
the silly things they boys did and went to jail for!
the photographs Julie takes
and most importantly i loved Bruce!! He is soooo HOT! <3

Genre Sunday (round#2)

My pick this Sunday is the genre "Dytopia"

"Utopia and Dystopia are genres of literature that explore social and political structures."
-Source

Meaning:
Dystopia as defined by Wikipedia is the idea of a repressive and controlled state of society. The opposite of Utopia-which refers to an ideal society with perfect socio-politico-legal system. Concepts of dystopia often feature repressive sytems and explore concepts of humans abusing technology and/or human individually.

"Here are features of Dystopian Fiction:
  • Post-apocalyptic setting,  usually there is the background story of natural disaster, revolutions, war, climate change, some kind of devastating event that changed society
  • Dystopians are normally future based
  • A difference in the standard of living than what we enjoy in today's society.  This can be a poorer standard of living, as in The Hunger Games, or sometimes a more materialistic environment, like such in Brave New World and Uglies.
  • The main character questions society, or is exposed to the baser ideals of their society within the plot, leading them to the knowledge that something is terribly wrong with their world.
  • There is usually a group/revolution occurring within the novel that the controlling state does not have control over that the protagonist teams up with or strives to join/become like, although nothing is being changed by the character or group.  In Brave New World, this group is comprised of the people on the reservation.
  • Dystopian fiction typically elaborates on the darker society trends that effect us today.  Usually the reader can identify things within our own society that could lead to this future terrible state.
  • Within the plot of a dystopian fiction, the protagonist usually will try to escape or bring down the society that restricts them."
-Parajunkee's View

Sub-genres of Dytopian fiction :

Combinations- a mix of utopia and dystopia
Ecotopians- the concepts usually revolve around the conservation or destruction of the environment.
Feminist utopias- this often presents women as equals to men. Since society often blames male-dominance as one of the many social problems in the world

History

The term "dystopian" was first coined in by Thomas Moore in 1516 in his book called "Utopia" !! (ha?)
Here is a timeline which attempts to mark important dates and influence of the genre. i have included seveal links in this post instead of re-typing the information from the added links for two reasons- 1. to avoid making the post long and tiresome for the reader and 2. So i can cite the various sources with convenience.

List of Dytopian literature:
the Hunger Games triolgy by Suzanne Collins
Brave New World by Aldous huxley
1984 by George Orwell
Farenheit 481 by Ray Bradbury
The Running Man by Richard Bacchman aka Stephen King
Uglies by Scott Westefield
The Host by Stephenie Meyer
Wither by Lauren DeStephano

This post seems to be less informative on the topic, so sometime later i will do a follow-up post on the same topic with more information. I typed up this post in a sot of hurry because i couldn't do it all day, and now its nearly night time and Sunday is about to end. I decided this time I will be regualr with this feature rather than quit it halfway! Hehe..so excuse the slight loose-ness of this post. i promise I will put together a tighter more informative follow-up-post soon! Until then...equip yourself with these...

while attending this event!! Why this one? Because its an event that will disuss the follwing genres- Steampunk, Paranormal, Urban Fantasy, Horror. Historical Fiction and Dystopian!

I know its a very small goal, but I am a slow reader and school starts Monday so it will be hard for me to pull out time..Nevertheless I want to go on the Read-a-thon! Though if i surprise myself and finish real fast then i'll extend the challenge..

Here is my list from which i will be picking the final 3....

The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson (this one is definitely on the list!)
The Betrayal of Maggie Blair- Elizabeth Laird
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkein
The Blind Watchmaker by Richard Dawkins...

I will upload a final list over the next few days...Any suggestions on which ones i should keep on my list? What is your goal for the challenge..leave me a link so i can drop by..

13th July 2011

My current status..Haven't been online a lot so missed a lot of the event..:(
I managed to read only one book from my ambitious list..but it was 746 pages and i had school..so maybe i can forgive myself..

My mini-challenges...

@ YA Bliss- Love Triangle dilemmas-
1) Dimitri vs Adrian for Rose Hathaway from the Vampire Academy Series

2) Jacob vs Edward for Bella Swan- I am not a Twilight fan and don't support either (but after the movie more Edward than Jacob..*hehe*) but this is the most popular and seeming ultimate triangle
3) umm...so hard..when it comes down to it..15 minutes later..can't come up with a third..:/

@ The Bookish Types- Judging a book by its cover

Haha..i like this so fun! :D

Uncommon Criminals (Heist Society, #2)

Katy Hilton is the daughter of the richest man in town, in fact richer than the people who produced 90210 or perhaps the producers of Star World all together. Obviously Katy lives the up to it clothed in her favorite brands, flying around the world on private jets and throwing mega parties over at her mansion. Aside from being rich and beautiful Katy also has a brain. She has a real talent.
This talent runs in the family and is in fact a well kept secret.
But all secrets are revealed eventually...
Can the Hilton pull of their biggest Heist this time?

@ Wicked Awesome Books - Matchmaking

Readers turn cupids eh?!
Hmm...this took me a while to browse the entire archives of couple and then work put compatibly and all..! lol

Here is what i came up with- Rose Hathaway ( from the Vampire Academy series) and Patch Cipriano (Hush, Hush) ! I know your going what?! Vampire bodyguard and a Fallen Angel! Wow, but weirder things have happened?! I think they go because Rose is so bold upfront and impulsive  and Patch is bold too. He can be brutal and intimidating and so can Rose! Yes opposites attract but hey they're  going to prove a challenge to each other! And a good challenge leads to some lurrve! :) What match did you make?

Genre Sundays

Genre Sundays is new meme I am introducing to my blog!
In this meme i am going to talk about... genres!..LOL.. I bet you caught that. Well genres as in categories of anything- books, movies, music, clothes etc. I will start of with books and work my way to other categories.

I rejected this idea several times in my head, but currently my blog is dying. I've barely done any reviews or posts or anything. So it seemed like a good idea to start it!
Blogging introduced me to a ginormous new dimension of cyberspace. In this dimension i discovered blogging and YA and books and more books and genres! Lots of times i came across themes which puzzled me and later on fascinated me. For instance Steampunk on vvb2, or Dystopia on Parajunkee and so on.
So i decided i should do a regular feature on these genres i discover...

To begin with I have chosen an extremely popular topic which is the soul of Book Blogging- Young Adult!
I bet you guys know LOADS about the genre, nevertheless i decided to put together a fairly short pot defining it and some history on the topic! Enjoy...

Definition

"Young-adult fiction (often abbreviated as YA) is fiction written for, published for, or marketed to adolescents and young adults, roughly ages 12 to 18.

Young-adult fiction, whether in the form of novels or short stories, has distinct attributes that distinguish it from the other age categories of fiction. The vast majority of YA stories portray an adolescent as the protagonist, rather than an adult or a child. The subject matter and story lines are typically consistent with the age and experience of the main character, but beyond that YA stories span the entire spectrum of fiction genres. The settings of YA stories are limited only by the imagination and skill of the author.

Themes in YA stories often focus on the challenges of youth, so much so that the entire age category is sometimes referred to as problem novels or coming of age novel. Writing styles of YA stories range widely, from the richness of literary style to the clarity and speed of the unobtrusive. Despite its unique characteristics, YA shares the fundamental elements of fiction with other stories: character, plot, setting, theme, and style."

Brief History

The first recognition of Young Adult as a distinct group was by Sarah Trimmer in 1802.She introduced the terms "Books for Children" ( under 14) and "Books for Young Persons" (between 14-21) in her self-founded Children's Literature periodical - The Guardian of Education.
Some novels from this time- Oliver Twist, The Count of Monte Cristo, Tom Brown's School Days, Alice in Wonderland, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, Heidi, ..
During the 19th century the Young Adult genre became more individual and cemented. In the stormy sixties the focus was moved onto the under 30's- wherein the YA genre became a more researched topic . Basically the distinction became stronger. In 1950's two very popular YA books were released- The Catcher in the Rye(1951) and Lord of Flies (1954)...
.
The modern classification of YA fiction originated during the 1950's and 60's. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton focused on a group of teens and told a darker and truer side of YA life because it was written by a young adult himself, rather than an adult getting all nostalgic.
During 1970s- the mid 1980s young adult books began approaching more serious topics such as rape, drugs, alcohol, sex, identity, teen pregnancy etc. At this point it was thought that the genre was done for, YA had been covered and exhausted. Turns out they were wrong, during the last few decades this genre has flourished. Today the teen market has became more marketable than any other segment!

List of YA books...

To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee
The Bell Jar by  Sylvia Path
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Mary Angelou
The Bluest Eyes by Toni Morrison....
the list can go on, but since this is a fairly popular topic i am going to keep the list short..

What did you think of the meme?
The genre?
Do you have anything to add to this?

2011 Movie Madness Challenge

                                Movie Madness

With all these lists and Challenge post i am making on my blog, I am starting to develop a habit of making mental list of everything i do with a common theme! :P
So now i am always counting everything i do- how often i am bored, how many movies have i watched, how many seasons of Buffy i have finished, how many times I've done this and done that! Its hilarious and annoying at the same time. Though i feel a knot of tension every time i do that- i guess its because in Indian customs a superstition exists that counting something jinxes it!I find it funny but when you grow up with that stuff it tends to evoke reaction involuntarily!
Just yesterday I watched P.O.C.4 and then i went i should make a note of how many movies I watched this year. And here i am participating in the Movie Madness Challenge..*grin*
Turns out counting is an encouraged custom around here...(blogosphere)...

The Creative Geek and A Girl, Books & Other Things have created a Movie Madness Challenge for 2011.
The Mission, if you choose to accept it, is to watch as many movies as you can in 2011!
Guidelines:
· Record each movie you watch. You don’t have to review any or all of them but at the end of each much make a post with the list of movies you have seen that month and a final tally of 2011 to help keep track of it all.

· There are four levels in which you can attempt to achieve:
  1. 25 Movies: Movie Newbie
  2. 50 Movies: Movie Fanatic
  3. 75 Movies: Movie Critic
  4. 100+ Movies: Movie Master
· Mini Series count but only as ONE movie, as do Television Series (the entire series and not just single episodes)

· The movies don’t need to be new, old favorites also count.

I will start out with Level 1..I've watched a fairly large amount of movies and T.V series up until now..In the list i will include whatever i can recall and movies I watched today onwards..(okay yesterday..so i can include P.O.C)
My list is here..
Besides lists are a good thing, they help get organized and all! And me being a messy person -this is a good habit to develop right?! *grin*

The Enchantress of Florence

"Jodha's sisters, her fellow wives, resented her. How could the mighty emperor prefer the company of a woman who did not exist?"
