(His Dark Material Trilogy #1) Northern Lights by Phillip PullmanWhen

Northern Lights (His Dark Materials, #1)

When Lyra is given the strange secret alethiometer, she begins an extraordinary journey that will take her to the frozen lands of the Arctic, where witch-clan reign and ice-bears fight. The destiny that waits her will have immeasurable consequences far beyond her own world...

I wasn't all that interested in this trilogy when it first came out, not even when the movie was made. But the other day when i was thinking of books for the Screen to Page Challenge, this book came to mind. Its also on the BBC's list of must-read books, so i finally decided to check it out for myself. A fun and adventurous  middle grade read.
The story was about a little tomboy named Lyra who was brought up with scholars. She has interesting connections, and once they begin to surface, nobody can hide them from her. Eventually she pieces her past together with information from a variety of sources, all the while on an adventure.
The concepts in the book are fun and original. Especially the demon concept, i like it very much! I wish i had one of my very own!!
The setting and the characters were intriguing and not cliche, nothing was cliche, not even the "love story" aspect of it. Two character i just did not get in the book were Mrs Coultier and Lord Asriel! They were so bizzare and insufficiently explained!
My favorite character was Iorek Byrson! He is a polar bear, who isn't goopy, ferocious or rude. He can't be stereotyped or labelled-his personality is such a soup!
It was a slow read for me, i took my own time, i didn't even speed up when i got to the last 2 pages- I just shut it! And finished it a week later. It was not a boring read, nut neither an exciting read.I don't quite have an opinion on the book; hence the jumbled review!
I would give it a 3 on 5 for cool setting (ha! no pun intended!), Iorek, interesting protagonist and demons!:D
What did you think of the book? (Link up your review please..)

Coolest New Designer in Cyber Space- ?

As you would have noticed i got my very own customized blog layout!! *squeeel*
I heart the header and button very much! Feel free to grab it!:D I am still playing around with my template...so its bound to keep changing every few days...But i haven't made this post to ramble about my new template! This post brings to you an exclusive never before interview with the designer of the layout.
*drumroll*
NAJLA QAMBERS....

What do you do?
4 Basic things. I read, I review, I design and Illustrate. Of course there are my other hobby's like drawing, painting and playing the bass.

She also runs the blog page Unputdowable Books
Photobucket
Tell us more about your designing work? What does it involve?
Well, I try my best to illustrate and realize anything my client wants. From Brochures to Stickers and a lot more in between. I try to be versatile. Some designers are Illustrators, or Type Artists or even 3D Designers. I'm trying to be one of the few that can do all. I've got Illustration covered and the basic designs now I'm trying to venture into Type Art and 3D designs. It'll be a challenge but I like the challenge.

What and When did you get involved with this field?
At 13 I found a new art genre which is called PhotoManipulation which I found on Deviantart.com and from there I started manipulating some photos and it just completely evolved. And because of these illustrations/Photomanipulations I got a job at a design studio at 16 as an Intern under some amazing Senior Designers. They were amazing mentors and they taught me loads of stuff soon after I started becoming independent and as I worked under the studio I also became a freelance designer. And because of university I had to quit my job and became a full on independent designer. Today, I'm under the wing of a new studio as a part-timer.

A little bit about Najla Qamber? (its your soon-to-be-firm right?)
Well, Najla Qamber is my name and thought it would be easier for my clients to recognize me if I just used my name. I'm a freelance and for now, I won't be turning it into a firm of any kind. But if ever. I'd call it Entity.

What all projects have you taken up so far?
Oh boy, theres a lot. At the beginning of my career I didn't do much but designed Labels for products, billboards and T-shirt designs. As I progressed I started doing posters and even conceptualizing logos and complete brands including their stationery. Along the lines of my book blog I started doing blog layouts as well as buttons, headers and even bookmarks. I also had the honor of doing a bands album cover. It was an amazing experience.

What is a typical day in the shoes of Najla?
A typical day in Naj's shoes is getting up in the morning to go to Uni, doing some assignments, designing, then at night I read and review. Lets just say, I am never bored and I'm a complete workaholic.

What do you do when your not, blogging, reading or designing?
Watching a lot of Asian Dramas including some awesome American TV Shows as well as British ones too. I love Supernatural and Glee!

Have you always wanted to be a designer or you had other career's in mind?
I never thought I would be a designer. I always thought that would just always be my hobby. Before everything I just thought I'd work as a business woman helping my dad with his business. Its weird how we all turn out.

Any wise words of advice for my readers who aspire to be entrepreneurs like you?
The internet is an amazing tool. Get into E-Commerce and you'll be able to make a name for yourself by just making a customer-base online.

A random thing about you?
I'm a workaholic. I try to always be productive. Another thing! I'm half-filipino half-bahraini who can't speak arabic. So english is my first language while Filipino is my second. :D

Currently she is gathering a portfolio of her work, so she can start freelancing officially! How cool is that?!
So she is currently doing free blog designs and buttons, and maybe if your nice to her she could even do some poster and some other cool designer swag! *grin*  Head over to her Official Design Page to get in touch with her!!

Take a look at this...

This is just some of the cool stuff she has designed! She has even done an album cover for a Czech Band..!! Head over to Najila Quambers Designs and then come back and tell me what you thought of it?

Three Weeks with my Brother by Nicholas and Micah Sparks

                                   Three Weeks with My Brother

I couldn't find a suitable review to provide so your just going to have to catch the story through my review.
I will try not to bore you...
The book is a memoir written by Nicholas Sparks, in which he retrospects his entire life. His older brother Micah Sparks and him decide to go on a world tour together, and the main story line is the narration of his entire trip. Running parallel to his trip, Sparks tells us the story of how his parents got married in college, how he grew up in tough times, his antics as the middle sibling among a sister and brother. He also narrated the grief he went through loosing nearly his entire family and the joys of his wedding, his babies, his writing and more or less his entire life until now. Not exactly now..but you know..until whenever he wrote this book.
It took me really long to finish this book, its one of those books that you read between other fast-paced thriller novel or chic-lits or YA books.
The beginning was slow, at least for me, but this morning i decided to just finish it no matter how boring it got. Because my Goodreads meter thing keeps reminding me how i am falling back on my goal of 200 books this year and also my pile of half-read book is multiplying faster than i can count.
All these factors put together and the fact that trails of grief began to pop into the book. This made me very curious and distressed, so i had to pursue them. And they came one after the other, the amount of hardships the Spark brother have endured is a lot, lot more than i have come across. The fact that they both have each and they did not give up on their own lives is amazing!
By the end of the book. Nicholas explains how it made him a better person and value things and life a lot more.
We all come across these little quotes that tell you to do similar thing, but when how many of us ACTUALLY take it seriously. Yes, it makes one think, but you shrug it off or put it aside in your head and go on.
But Micah and Nicholas actually learnt lessons and learned to work towards a better life. I am not saying, it inspired me to do the same, i still enjoy living as a careless teen, thank you!
But what i mean to say is, when you read this book, its puts you in a state of awe as to how they are in one piece today.
The book is not all sob-story, there is a lot humor and information on Nicholas's claim to fame and how he got to writing the genre of book he does and also some historical facts on the places he visited on his trip.If your patient enough you can even concoct an interview with him, without actually even talking to him.
With all the depth, i didn't get all teary and retrospective myself neither did i consider the book my inspiration or any such thing. The book is simply a beautiful and deep story which you must read if you enjoy (thats not quite the word to use with his works is it?) Nicholas Spark's works and also if your slightly emotional about life and things.
I would give it a 3 on 5!

Playing Hurt by Holly Schindler

                                      Playing Hurt

"Star basketball player Chelsea "Nitro" Keyes had the promise of a full ride to college—and everyone's admiration back home. Then she took a horrible fall during senior year. Now a metal plate holds her together and she feels like a stranger in her own family.
That summer, Chelsea's dad hires Clint, a nineteen-year-old ex-hockey player and "boot camp" trainer, to work with her at a northern Minnesota lake resort. As they grow close, Chelsea finds that Clint's haunted by his own tragedy. Will their romance end up hurting them all over again—or finally heal their heartbreak?"

We were super-thrilled (as Halinor has already described to you!) when we received the book plus some cool swag from the author herself!!

I would like to first thank Holly Schindler for giving us this opportunity! Thank you so much!!! :)

And now for the review...
The book pulls you into the story right from the first page. Holly's writing is beautiful and her descriptions vivid. You can picture every scene, moment or thought unfolding right in front of you. Its as though she is painting a picture for you and there is no need for guesswork.Thats what i adore about her, ditto with her first novel!
The story was a simple one when you boil it down..girl has to choose between boyfriend or summer boyfriend!!There is no suspense as such, you can figure it all out once you've had your introduction with the characters.
What distinguishes the book is the theme she chose- picking one boy from two your attached to!As in, most YA crisis have fairly obvious solution, whereas this theme is still a sore spot for most of us. When you "fall in love" with another boy even though you already have one by your side. Who will you choose? Its definitely not an easy task dealing with the whole mess...
One of the many things  i liked about the book was that the fact that the story was just an excerpt from Chelsea and Clint's life..not a happily-ever-after tale of their life. Just one incident in their life, so by the end of the book you can't quite judge them on their character to take a side because theirs is a reaction to the circumstance. Despite being in Chelsea and Clint's head you don't know them like pals, unlike other book wherein you have the protagonist all figured out. Here its just like meeting them briefly, like peeping into somebody's life.
The fact that the book has no ties- nothing is permanent in the story- makes it beautiful to me!
What nudges you to read on is the growing anxiety and tension in Chelsea and Clint's relationship.
Nothing else, the rest of the story was okay to me. The healing from all the heart-break wasn't all that great to me!
One character i did not like in the book was Gabe- Chelsea's boyfriend, he is so disturbingly mushy!!I didn't have any favorites, though i would have liked to meet Clint's ex!
Oh and i also have to mention, the cover is gorgeous. Its so summer-y and perfectly suited to the story! And the texture is really cool, i wonder if Holly wanted it that way or Flux published all their book like that, because even Blue So Dark has a similar texture!

Book Review Alert!!! - Playing Hurt by Holly Schindler

First of all let me just initiate this review, by saying that I'm super excited about the fact that my blogger buddy Kiwi was able to convince Holly Schindler to send us a copy of this book. This is completely un-trodden ground for us, considering how we're just starting out and all, but never the less, the author was compassionate enough to mail us a copy of the book along with a few decadent gifts and believe me, we squealed like little kids oblivious to the probing glares of the people around us.
So this was a small note prior to the review, and it is completely dedicated to thanking Miss Holly profusely for granting a petty desperate wish we've been clinging on to like stubborn children, and really lighting up our summer. Thanks Holly, you made two little, nerdy Indian girls astonishingly happy!
Honestly we love you,
Halinor Everdeen Cipriano

Now what you're all probably waiting for,
The review to Holly Schindler's second novel - Playing Hurt, now ensues...

I was really awaiting the arrival of this book with numbing eagerness, and boy did it look beautiful! I adore the cover, it's got this very thought provoking image, which really allows the versatility of  forming little stories in your head, and I just love that! (Just so you know it also feels like velvet, and doesn't crease, all you people out there would love to  devour the fact wouldn't you? I know I'm infatuated with it!)
Anyway, where was I before I got carried away like that... Ah yes! So yeah, I did love the cover, and I really did love to finally get my hands on this book...

Playing Hurt really isn't about suspense, and leaving you on an edge, the characters' pasts are revealed gradually but without any mountains of suspense gaining momentum. You're pretty much aware of the fact that both the protagonists are brutally scarred by malicious incidents that occurred in their past. Chelsea (one of the protagonists) has her tale covered in the very beginning, but it takes you a while to fully revel in Clint's past.
So here's a brief run through on my tumultuous emotions in the first half, and also a bit of the plot. (Now I'm not giving away any spoilers so don't hide away!)
Chelsea had the perfect life, the perfect boyfriend, the perfect dream and the perfect college all planned out. The world was really coughing out it's finest for her. She was revered and worshiped, and her accomplishments were preached far and wide. Chelsea was the star player in her school's basketball team, and she really knew how to dish out a good game, but when it came upon her to prove herself in senior year, she found herself in the emergency room with a gruesome metal plate holding her hip together, and preventing her from crumbling like a fragile fountain. With her hopes mirthlessly spat on, Chelsea finds herself with nothing to do, but to drift along life like a bobblehead.
Clint Morgan seems like a model child, he's gotten straight A's, two steady jobs (not to mention another in the making) and a beautiful place to call home. Only problem is, that he's broken on the inside and works himself silly just to stay sane.
So there you have it, two people who are very very sad, and really don't have purpose, that is until they meet at a Boot Camp (organised by Clint) and begin to struggle, fight and chew against the bonds that restrain them, hoping finally that they can stop plummeting.

What I really loved about this book was the way every scene was so vividly described and laced with wonderful instances, that you could see the images and people dancing  before your eyes, I really adored Holly's amazing choice of words that made the simple storyline incredibly enchanting. It seemed as though everything was given wings and was promoted from basic to structured. Someone as simple as Chelsea, a girl with dreams left unfulfilled, was taken to a point where she developed into so much more. She became a girl who was passionately in love, who was riddled with guilt, who was basking in oblivion and who experienced the jagged pull of new emotions and experiences. It was great! Clint stayed pretty standard throughout, (or at least that's what I perceived, but I know it wasn't intended that way...) he was a sad young man, to a now liberated young man, who was able to love again... I pretty much saw that coming. But that's the magic of this story! You know what's going to happen, it's just that the roads leading to the grand finale are a little more elaborate and intricate than you thought. I was startled by the sophistication of Holly's writing. it really puts her way ahead of other's in her game. The story really builds, even though the storyline stays the same, it's like one brick, but with different shades of scarlet. The routes leading to the pleasantly realistic ending were riddled with flowers that bloomed to surprise and enchant you.  I couldn't help but read the story in one sitting, all owing to the fact that you wanted to experience more. That's what this book is... One big emotional roller coaster ride, that has little messages blinking discreetly here and there. It teaches you a lot, but the values are different for everyone.
Read this book if you want to discover a new side of you, and learn to expose yourself to the raw, steely taste of reality before it slams into you in the real world. Playing Hurt is a shortcut to building a hard exterior around you, that could help you stay rooted even in the most horrifying trials, and that is the best thing I could possibly look for in a book. The only disappointing part was the fact that, certain bits of the story weren't dealt with as appropriately as they should have been. Events, and people seemed placed at the convenience of the heroes and they just popped in and out, blankly without the electricity that Clint and Chelsea seemed to posses so generously. Naturally with two such capable protagonists, you would expect more of everything. I won't say it isn't provided at all, it is...it's just that I loved Holly's style so much, that I probably have these inhuman expectations of her grasp of human emotions now... So most of my issues are purely relative...
But honestly, read it because it's insightful, witty and really is an uplifting summer experience.

I Know this becomes tiresome, but hey it's a tradition, and we wouldn't want to break one of those now would we? Therefore, I think this book is deserving of:  THREE AND A HALF STARS!!!!

Signing out,
Yours truly,
with great respect and love and all that gooey stuff,
Love and Fist bumps forever (can't leave that out now can we? it's my signature line!),

First Stop on the Playing Hurt Tour- Guest post by the author herself

As promised i bring to you a guest post by Holly Schindler...

Chelsea Before Her Injury

Before Chelsea’s injury, her world would have involved the basketball court—and her driveway.  She would have spent hours in that driveway, practicing all her shots.  I can see her racing through her homework in order to get back to her driveway practice sessions. I can see texts going unanswered as Chelsea perfects her layup.  I can see her out in that driveway in the heat of summer, as night descends, even as the rain starts to fall.  Her world, to a great extent, would have been in that rectangle of concrete…until her horrible accident, of course.

But you know, I have a theory about characters who haven’t endured emotional turmoil—I just don’t think you can write a novel about them.  In my debut, A BLUE SO DARK, Aura endures her fair share of tragedy: the loss of her father, her mother’s slow descent into madness…And both protagonists in PLAYING HURT have been dealt their share of tragedy as well: Chelsea the loss of her basketball, Clint the loss of his girlfriend.

A character who has not endured his or her own share of heartache is fairly one-dimensional, because—let’s face it—happiness is one-dimensional.  It’s—happy.  Period.

I think that even when you have a character who is generally upbeat and positive, you should seriously consider what that person has endured in their lifetime.  Imagine what the source of their greatest disappointment so far might be.  I mean, your character might not have lost his girlfriend in an accident, like Clint…but what’s been the greatest disappointment in your character’s life so far?  What is a source of fear for your character?  Why?  That’s the kind of thing that will begin to add depth to your character.

So—life before the accident?  Chelsea was a ball player.  Sure—she had a boyfriend, a life off the court.  But in her head?  She was a ballplayer.  Period.  After the accident?  Chelsea has to redefine herself—and crafting that new definition is part of what truly begins to give her depth.

Wild Child by Mike Wells

"Briana Fox is the wildest girl in school.  She and Kyle have been friends for a long time...almost lovers.  When Briana challenges Kyle to a swim across the lake, she's injured in a terrible accident, but also discovers a mysterious substance in an underwater cave.  What seems to be a magical yet harmless "power drug" turns out to have unexpected properties.  Briana soon becomes dependent on it for her very survival.  When two government agents get wind of their discovery, they will stop at nothing  to force Kyle and Briana  to reveal its source."

My blogger bud- Halinor got an email from by Mike Wells-the author of Wild Child and he sent her an e-copy of this book to review! And we *squeeeaaled* over the phone! We are still newbies to the author emailing scene, so any form of correspondence with an author makes us go all crazy and....uh... squeal-y!!
And she sent me an e-copy..and it was..
A really gripping book!
I know the cover isn't very attention grabbing but the story is a totally engaging one!
The story was short and fast-paced without too much fluff.A very original storyline!!
The writing style is very simple and regular author type but the plot is amazing!! The book wasn't descriptive enough to form bonds with any of the characters but it was just enough to get absorbed by the book.
The suspense made me sick and so did some bits where Briana's insides start to to pop out! The story is a cross between realistic YA and slight elements of the supernatural-ness!
The book did not disappoint me, and i am awestruck by how the author even came up with an ending for it. I would have gone on reading some more of the story if there was any. It was perfect and left me with an eerie feeling.
The characters introduced are minimal , unlike most books where you have a sense of a very populated little fiction world surrounding the book!
The entire time i read the book, i was anticipating something awful to happen! A really Good read!
Two complaints i had-
1.i wish the illustration on the cover had been done differently, i don't like the way it looks and and it almost put me off, until i read the synopsis.
2. A different book title, its so deceiving and somehow not suitable in my opinion. There are no elements of "Wild child-ness" in the book. With and exception of the mild rebellious character of Brianna!

My Review For Wild Child by Mike Wells

Sometimes when you begin to read a novel which involves the characters being thrust into impossible, deplorable situations, you just know that somehow certain events will incline themselves in the favor of the story or at the convenience of it winding up to leave no conflict uncalled for...

I am happy to say that Wild Child by Mike Wells, is one of the bleak few YA novels that is startlingly realistic, and despite having a significantly fantastical theme, it manages to have the reader nodding his/her approval because he realizes that he couldn’t have handled the situation better himself! So naturally if you’re acknowledging the fact that the best way out of the muddle was what the character did, and was pretty conceivable – the fact that the author was able to incorporate this into a fantasy novel is pretty admirable, at least to me it is because honestly you really don’t see that very often anymore. Most of the time, situations in books are just classified as fate and are filed in that cabinet. As if terming it that way really makes the story more gripping… let’s face it, fate has more discreet ways of working, not as blatantly as certain books portray it to… Wild Child has no instances where the Universe bends its will to suit the storyline; in fact the plot is rather enigmatic, but still remains intrinsically simple throughout.
Kyle’s best friend Brianna is a rather vivacious creature quite simply put, she revels in the Now rather than dwell upon how things she does may affect tomorrow. Kyle on the other hand is like her guardian angel, and is really the personification of self constriction. On a rather eventful day at the lake, Brianna gets fatally wounded after a run in with a speed boat and finds herself in a cave that has strange glowing water. After bathing in the cave, Brianna’s wounds heal and she finds herself completely rejuvenated and euphoric. She gets back to Kyle, completely energized by the water and takes him to the cave to witness it’s wonderment personally. Kyle considers the water rather harshly, and declines a drink of it, he also forbids Briana from sipping anymore… but little does he know about how necessary his visits there will have to be in the future. Brianna soon begins to fall ill again and her very life force depends solely on the water. What is Kyle, her sole benefactor to do now? It all goes down to the crucial decisions that Kyle has to make…
So that’s the basic plot of the story, although it has many intriguing and impressively constructed events occurring in between. I like how the relationship between Kyle and his Dad was incorporated into the book, it added that extra zing to the story, and it’s like when you know the part isn’t really necessary, but it’s only there to refine the tale more. It gave a gritty and more urgent feel to the story. Despite the simple weaving of the tale, certain intelligently included plots popped in and out of life, constantly reminding you that the situations were to be heavily considered and not to be taken lightly. They successfully created a little brick that weighed down on you and inclined you to feel grief, worry and suspicion as the characters felt it. Now I realize that commonly encountered problems with short books are that you never really have time to understand the characters and get a feel for them rather than for their situations alone. You might say, you haven’t met them enough to know what runs their cogs. I too sadly experienced this in certain parts, where I wasn’t able to pinpoint the characters basic functions, or responses to situations. I refute by saying though, that this really works to the story’s advantage, and gives it a more ominous feel, where you can’t really tell what’s just around the block.
All in all I’d say the book is definitely worth a serious read through because it’s snappy, relatable and incredibly gripping and heartwarming. I loved the whole aura of clarity that hung on every page.

Owing to the intricately sculpted emotions that played out in the book, and the expertly included morbid undertones I have decided to give this book:

$4$ STARS!!!

Love and Fist Bumps forever,
