How To Be Alone by Tanya Davis

"If you are at first lonely, be patient. If you've not been alone much, or if when you were, you weren't okay with it, then just wait. You'll find it's fine to be alone once you're embracing it.
We could start with the acceptable places, the bathroom, the coffee shop, the library. Where you can stall and read the paper, where you can get your caffeine fix and sit and stay there. Where you can browse the stacks and smell the books. You're not supposed to talk much anyway so it's safe there.
There's also the gym. If you're shy you could hang out with yourself in mirrors, you could put headphones in (guitar stroke).
And there's public transportation, because we all gotta go places.
And there's prayer and meditation. No one will think less if you're hanging with your breath seeking peace and salvation.
Start simple. Things you may have previously (electric guitar plucking) based on your avoid being alone principals.
The lunch counter. Where you will be surrounded by chow-downers. Employees who only have an hour and their spouses work across town and so they -- like you -- will be alone.
Resist the urge to hang out with your cell phone.
When you are comfortable with eat lunch and run, take yourself out for dinner. A restaurant with linen and silverware. You're no less intriguing a person when you're eating solo dessert to cleaning the whipped cream from the dish with your finger. In fact some people at full tables will wish they were where you were.
Go to the movies. Where it is dark and soothing. Alone in your seat amidst a fleeting community.
And then, take yourself out dancing to a club where no one knows you. Stand on the outside of the floor till the lights convince you more and more and the music shows you. Dance like no one's watching...because, they're probably not. And, if they are, assume it is with best of human intentions. The way bodies move genuinely to beats is, after all, gorgeous and affecting. Dance until you're sweating, and beads of perspiration remind you of life's best things, down your back like a brook of blessings.
Go to the woods alone, and the trees and squirrels will watch for you.
Go to an unfamiliar city, roam the streets, there're always statues to talk to and benches made for sitting give strangers a shared existence if only for a minute and these moments can be so uplifting and the conversations you get in by sitting alone on benches might've never happened had you not been there by yourself

Society is afraid of alonedom, like lonely hearts are wasting away in basements, like people must have problems if, after a while, nobody is dating them. but lonely is a freedom that breaths easy and weightless and lonely is healing if you make it.
You could stand, swathed by groups and mobs or hold hands with your partner, look both further and farther for the endless quest for company. But no one's in your head and by the time you translate your thoughts, some essence of them may be lost or perhaps it is just kept.
Perhaps in the interest of loving oneself, perhaps all those sappy slogans from preschool over to high school's groaning were tokens for holding the lonely at bay. Cuz if you're happy in your head than solitude is blessed and alone is okay.
It's okay if no one believes like you. All experience is unique, no one has the same synapses, can't think like you, for this be releived, keeps things interesting lifes magic things in reach.
And it doesn't mean you're not connected, that communitie's not present, just take the perspective you get from being one person in one head and feel the effects of it. take silence and respect it. if you have an art that needs a practice, stop neglecting it. if your family doesn't get you, or religious sect is not meant for you, don't obsess about it.
you could be in an instant surrounded if you needed it
If your heart is bleeding make the best of it
There is heat in freezing, be a testament."

REVIEW OF A BOOK I READ LAST YEAR - CLICK HERE: TO FIND OUT HOW I SURVIVED SEVENTH GRADE

I found this read when I was shuffling through a shoulder high stack of books at my city's book fair. I seemed fairly satisfied with the basic storyline embossed on the back in glossy black writing, that was gathered within alluring, colorful and disturbingly pleasant pictures. (Disturbing because it was mostly pictures of candy, tongues and braces if I recall correctly, oh! And not to mention abnormally size-able feet...)
The story basically revolves around this young girl (really can't bother to go hunt down the book, or prod myself into remembering her name...)who has a terribly ego-centric friend, who she ABSOLUTELY adores!! It's a story that is probably at the epitome of BOOKS THAT ARE TERRIBLY ONE-SIDED (BTATOS... I should add a listopia on this, where do I get this stuff from?)
I say this and antagonize the book, because it's so terribly misdirecting! Suppose you were to have big feet and did read it, you'd be humiliated by some of the responses and prejudice the students who meet Miss. Protagonist revel in! It also swells certain fantastical (allegedly popular) people's vanity potency and leaves you wondering where you're left in this world if you don't have people groveling at your toes...
Miss. Protagonist has freakishly over-sized feet, (ones that I grew to adore... strange, but considerable because it's just like large font...It screams for attention rather than meekly or flirtatiously hollering for it!)a comical condition she's always admonished for... piteous and detestable really! But here's the catch, it's her first day of middle school , and she's pried apart from her delicious (perfectly pompous, and rancid)best friend... therefore she's all panicky, she's a self- critical, or rather self-decrepit character that would rather pee in her large Chucks than be introduced to the intrinsic courtship rituals of pre-teens... Then she meets Mike (???I blame my faulty memory, honestly I had nothing to do with it!)who brings out a timid, bashful side of her and leaves her in a dizzying fit of giggles every time she meets him... The problem? He's painfully dashing and soon (despite Miss. Protagonist's best efforts) finds the bitchy best friend yummy, like a choice array of meat. (terribly pungent, dog slobbery meat!)
So where am I getting with all of this? I'm just trying to ask that isn't this the kind of sod they've been feeding us for a while now? An insecure, self-conscious heroine, a scheming, pretentious best friend and one hot-shot they both would eat dirt for... Also somewhere along the way the heroine's eyes open, and she sees her friend for who she is and decides to stop punching Mr. Pillow, and throw a few shots at the friend herself... Believe me... I was just waiting agonizing minute after minute to see when I could actually read the story and not pointedly dictate the forthcoming plot to my oblivious dogs...

To conclude I would like to add, that although this review may not be very informative, or reinforce any faith you had in the fact that it may be good, it tells you that what you're about to read is basically a memory game... One that tests your ability to recall plots you may have encountered in other books... The only thing I did adore was the obvious passion with which the lead character tackled her computer classes and her blog, I also like the admirable relationship between her and her brother... These two elements have been life savers in this book, and have allowed it to veer off the precarious flop-show peak, and enter the land of the passable. (but barely!)Read it if you're an insecure teen who hasn't read about other insecure teens yet...

My Misadventures as Teenage Rock Star by Joyce Raskin

My Misadventures as a Teenage Rock Star

"Rock ’n’ roll isn’t just about sex and drugs. It’s about self-expression, lasting friendships, and self-empowerment. That’s what Alex learns after she starts playing bass for a rock band in this almost true story. Joyce Raskin, author and musician, culls from her memories to create this funny, touching, and honest look at what it’s like to be a teenager, a girl, and a rock star all at the same time. "

I read it off NetGalley sometime last week. It was a really short and simple story- 14 year old Alex is the typical teen with image issues ,insecurity and crushes. Her story is a short one- her brother asks her to join a band as a bass player. And she does out of daze and confusion. It turns out to be a lot more fun than she anticipates. And the story as the title suggests is about her adventure as one or should i say "misadventures". The plot and writing was very plain, it was more informative than story telling which put me off. I still finished the book but i didn't like it too much.
It talks about Alex and her boyfriend, fame, touring, drugs, boys and other such issues. I guess its like a good general guide on this theme-teen rock star-ness.
The characters were nice, they engaged me; i don't have a favorite though-not even the protagonist.
It was funny how the book spoke of teen mishaps and crisis such as boys, drugs, fame etc like mundane things of life. That is very unlike other teen novels, which make either one of this a huge deal. This wasn't a bad thing just funny observation!
I would give it a 2 on 5 for its cute illustrations and nice characters.
Something you should read if you need to entertain yourself while waiting somewhere or if you need more books on your DAC list..hehe...

The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks

"The long-awaited follow-up to his classic tale of enduring love, The Notebook. After 30 years, Wilson Lewis, son-in-law to Noah and Allie (of The Notebook fame), is forced to admit that the romance has gone out of his marriage. Despite the shining example of his in-laws' 50-year love affair, Wilson himself is a man unable to express how he truly feels. With the distractions of his daughter's upcoming wedding he is forced to realize how close he is to losing his own wife Jane. But if Wilson is sure of anything, it's this: His love for his wife has only intensified over the years, and he wants nothing more than to make their marriage work. Now, with the memories of his in-laws' inspiring life together as his guide, Wilson pledges to find a way to make his wife fall in love with him. . . again..."

I read this one few weeks back as part of the Nicholas Sparks reading Challenge!

Just been too lazy to type up the review.!
Tear-wrenching just like all his other books. This is a sequel to The Notebook, i bet you've all heard of that one. Its was made into a movie too, it even won the MTV best Kiss Award!!
The story is about Jane and Wilson who are a married couple. They have 3 kids who have all grown up and moved out. Suddenly Wilson notices the awkward silences between him an Jane.He has been a work-a-holic for most of his life, and negelected his family a lot, and wakes up determined to changes things. He loves Jane a LOT, which is the cutest part of the book! And so he decides to re-kindle his romance with the help of Jane's dad-Noah. Noah is the protagonist from The Notebook.
there is no "plot" as such, its more like one of those romantic stroies which people would tell each other. Its the story of how Wilson makes his wife fall in love with him all over again. My favorite character is Wilson!
You know how there are some guys who have a hard time being "romantic" but the girl just never feels it because he is either too shy or just doesn't do it often. Wilson is like that, he really loves his wife but he is so shy he has such a hard time working things out with his wife! Its written in his voice, and i love him soo much!!
It was an engaging book and emotional one! I loved it, *sigh* good old Nicholas Sparks always makes my heart ache.I liked it very much. I would give it a 4 on 5! I really need to work out a rating system!!
I would recommend it to everyone who enjoys a good soppy story!

Today's Answer #4

A weekly meme hosted by Black Fingernailed Reviews who is also my featured blog in this week's Blog Hunt post!:D
Since she can never pick one favorite book or song, she picks them on weekly basis!Ha..i like that!

Here is my pick for this week...

My favorite book..

"The long-awaited follow-up to his classic tale of enduring love, The Notebook. After 30 years, Wilson Lewis, son-in-law to Noah and Allie (of The Notebook fame), is forced to admit that the romance has gone out of his marriage. REVIEW OF A TIMELESS CLASSIC - How the Grinch Stole Christmas - Dr. Seuss

There is a certain point where books (even at the epitome of humor) leave you sour and unwilling to struggle through to the last pages. No! Don't send me hate mail yet, because I am not criticizing this wonderful creation, for this is a sole book that veered off that precarious peak and managed to leave me in a fit of infantile giggles through out... there isn't a Dr Suess book that doesn't extract a gasp and/or amusement from me... thumbs up and cheers, because I absolutely feasted off the cheeky humor and the little quintessentially Dr.Seuss anecdotes. Never have I so giddily devoured a book like I have this one. It's very short, snappy and oh! So cute... If it were a person,  how I'd like to  pinch it's cheeks!!
Read it if you feel you're growing up too fast, and want a trip down memory lane, to a time when all that mattered were funny little rhymes....

I Know you've probably figured this bit out already, but hey it's mandatory! Despite the fact of it being blatantly obvious!!! I am giving this book :
5 STARS!!!

REVIEW ALERT!!! Pulling Princes by Tyne O Connel

I was ecstatic to read this book, and was prancing all around the book shop, overturning a few intimidating novels along the way in search of it. These novels bit persistently at my will power and taunted me to buy them, but no I said! I eschewed them with a firm, un-infiltratable hand and smirked.... Because for the first time I had deemed Pulling Princes as my weekend read, and was determined to purchase that, and that alone!
And how inexplicably thrilled I was by the glossy, contemporary cover, and by it's cheeky, enchanting storyline! This breathtaking specimen inflicted the final blow on my now withering resolution, I neglected the pleas of the weekend, and crouched down right there in the store and began to read.
To give you a brief summary, this book is about an unpopular, insecure American girl who's been inclined to attend boarding school in London and endure the mirthless taunts about her origin, accent and unsuitability. In other words she has been classified as a geek by the pretty, peppy blonde girls who have un-attainable titles like "The Honorable, and Lady" and is forced to roam the tainted confines of unpopularity. Fortunately she does not travel alone, accompanying her is Star, the daughter of an insanely rich rock star who even though is old news, he still has various cult fans screaming his name in a crazy tizzy...
So basically Calypso has been tormented ruthlessly, but this new term she has a plan! She's going to pretend as if Jay, her mothers' gay assistant is her boyfriend and get noticed by the popular peeps. (For truly isn't the universal truth, that you snog a few lads and suddenly find yourself whizzing up the social ladder?) Fortunately her plan works, she finds herself roomies with the most popular girl in school and also finds that Prince Freddie the youngest  in the royal family fancies her and not just her skillful fencing technique (which mind you, she used too whoop his skinny little behind!)
Now Brace yourself for yes, there is a vindictive, wretched and vile villain in this story and her name is... Honey! (Honestly the world is just one enormous bubbling stew of irony!)
What I find exasperating is the fact that Calypso forgives Honey for all the cruel things she does at the drop of a hat! It's ridiculous... Wouldn't you want to smack a girl who ruins your life by posting crude pictures of you to the paparazzi, or slips a ton of laxative into your food or even slaps you in plain sight of everyone you care about? That's one of the things that left me gaping in disbelief, also the fact that Calypso cries like a malnourished baby every few pages, also doesn't fail to have you smacking your face in disgust, for honestly... who doesn't want to see a brave protagonist these days?
Therefore I would like to conclude this size-able rant by adding that I did enjoy Pulling Princes, it was a satisfactory read for a rainy day and you are inclined to read it all the way through even if it is HUGELY predictable, what I despised was the wobbly kneed Calypso and her measly will power, but all in all if you have to read it, then do so for the hell of it!
LOVE AND FIST BUMPS AS ALWAYS,
HALINOR CIPRIANO <3
And here is your prerogative ritual of star endowment :
I BESTOW THIS BOOK, PULLING PRINCES BY TYNE O' CONNEL WITH - 3 STARS!!!

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

Cast- Just the 5 main characters
Elinor Dashwood- Emma Thompson
Marianne Dashwood- Kate Winslet
Edward Ferrars- Hugh Grant
John Willoughby-Greg Wise
Colonel Brandon-Alan Rickman

When Mr. Henry Dashwood dies, leaving all his money to his first wife's son John Dashwood, his second wife and her three daughters are left with no permanent home and very little income. Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters (Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret) are invited to stay with their distant relations, the Middletons, at Barton Park.Once at Barton Park, Elinor and Marianne discover many new acquaintances, including the retired officer and bachelor Colonel Brandon, and the gallant and impetuous John Willoughby...(from Sparknotes..)
Both sisters are heartbroken when their lovers spurn them..
I watched the movie on tele yesterday. I was supposed to study but i excused myself in the name of research (I am doing Jane Austen for lit) and watched this instead. Hahaha! I missed  5 minutes of the beginning and a few minutes here and there.
It was the 1995 one. I recognized Rose ( Marianne) from Titanic and Snape (Colonel Brandon) from Harry Potter. *grin*
I liked the story. It had an interesting twist to it.It had an irony to it- *spoiler alert* how Elinor and Marianne find their love are conflicting to their character i.e. Marianne finds her love the way Elinor would think appropriate and vice versa!
The society back then seemed so courteous! The bits where there was tension on  screen between the lovers  frustrated me. Because despite whatever emotion they felt, they had to be so formal with each other!
And i kept mentally comparing it with society and culture now. We are so informal and liberal. Back then so much thought and importance was giving to dressing, greeting, expressing, talking, behavior and every little thing you did. Its insane when you think about the dramatic changes our society has gone through!
I didn't so much find the male characters attractive except Willoughby (who i thought was cute) and Colonel Brandon for his kind and persistent character.Among the ladies..mm..Elinor and Marianne were pretty and Miss Grey (from the little glimpse i got) was too! Other than that not so much the rest. Margaret as very cute too!
For some odd reason i hoped for Maragret to have a big role in the story, and i wish Willoughby had more screen time! I think Colonel Brandon among the three lovers got the most screen time!
But somehow i had an uneasy sense about him throughout the movie.I got a feeling of suspicion towards him, i guess its because of his role in Harry Potter. But i think thats what credits him for his excellent acting skills!

Overall i would give the movie a 4 on 5!
A slightly random piece of information..while watching the movie, at one point i got a feeling of familiarity with one screen shot and realised that in the "Which Jane Austen character are you?" i got Elinor Dashwood! :P...Which one did you get?

Cover Crazy #5

Cover Crazy is a weekly meme hosted by The Book Worms on Mondays. The idea is to showcase book covers that draw your attention. This week i am crazy about...

I've been looking for this book to feature on Cover Crazy for ages (i forgot the title..hehe), i was browsing through my TBR list on Goodreads and it caught my attention (again!)
I LOVE her supper frilly frock and the blue stockings!I also love her red shoes-okay i love her entire ensemble (plush velvet couch and notebook included)! And i love her very bored look, she looks like a pretty girl. The cover goes really well with the synopsis, which is an interesting one by the way! You must check it out..click on the cover and it will take you to the one and only Goodreads page..!!

Which cover are you Crazy about this week?

Deadline by Simon Kernick

                                    Deadline

'We've got your daughter.'

"It's evening, you're back late from work - and the house is in darkness. You step inside, and the phone rings. You answer it - and your world turns upside down. Your fourteen-year-old daughter's been taken, and her kidnappers demand half a million pounds in cash. They give you 48 hours to raise the money, and warn you that if you call the police, she'll die. Trying desperately to remain calm, you realise that your husband - the man you married only two years previously - is also missing. But he can't be involved in your daughter's abduction. Or can he? As your nightmare begins, you can be certain of only two things: that you will do anything to get your daughter back alive - and that time is running out ..."

Ha, the synopsis doesn't name anyone! Thats an art!:P..sorry couldn't help but notice..
Okay.. my review..Andrea Devern, big-shot business woman, daughter gets kidnapped. Kidnappers want ransom money-she gets it together but breaks the rule of "not telling someone". So when she gives them the money, they take it but don't give her the daughter back. So a second time they demand the same amount..its 2 million dollars..by the way! This time the police end up getting involved and things get complicated..
I like Crime fiction, so one brownie rating for Deadline for falling under that genre. But otherwise the plot was very okay-okay, it was a looooong story which got quite boring. There were two protagonists- Andrea and the cop Bolt. In the beginning it was Andrea, until Bolt steps in and hogs the limelight. Emma-the kidnapped daughter got two-three chapters. I didn't enjoy the book very much, it was slow i would say...In my opinion pace makes or breaks a Crime fiction novel. This one the end was not predictable but it was annoyingly slow-it had a lot of unnecessary detail. But i kept going because i wanted to know what happens to Emma, and how does it happen. Otherwise there wasn't much excitement in the book..it was dull.
But some of the situation descriptions were good, they got me on the edge of  my seat or on the verge of annoyance.
But his other bestselling novel-his Debut-Relentless sounds interesting and so does Target!
So a 2 on 5 for Deadline..I really should work out a rating system!

Today's Answer #3

A weekly meme hosted by Black Fingernailed Reviews who is also my featured blog in this week's Blog Hunt post!:D
Since she can never pick one favorite book or song, she picks them on weekly basis!Ha..i like that!
Here is my pick for this week..

My favorite book...
The Missing Ink (Tattoo Shop Mystery, #1)
Brett Kavanaugh is a tattoo artist and owner of an elite tattoo parlor in Las Vegas. When a girl makes an appointment for a tattoo of the name of her fiancé embedded in a heart, Brett takes the job but the girl never shows. The next thing Brett knows, the police are looking for her client, and the name she wanted on the tattoo isn't her fiancé's...

I haven't read this one, but it sounds really interesting! And soo it my favorite for this week!:D

My favorite song...

I don't like the Ludachris part and the lyrics too much! But the tune is really catchy! And its ringing in my head on the loop!!:P
